A View From The Bridge

“I can’t believe this is happening at this level”- Chelsea’s Kai Havertz blasted for mistake in Germany’s loss vs Japan

Ian Wright blasts Chelsea forward Kai Havertz for a mistake in Germany’s defeat to Japan

Speaking on ITV (h/t Metro), former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright has blasted Kai Havertz for his mistake in the offside goal during Germany’s defeat to Japan in the World Cup.

The Asian side came from a goal down at half-time to beat the Germans 2-1 with a winning goal from Takuma Asano. Before the Japanese comeback, Ilkay Gundogan gave Germany the lead through a penalty.

Hansi Flick’s men had the ball in the back of the net just before half-time when Havertz slotted it in after a pass from Serge Gnabry. But, the Chelsea man was flagged offside by VAR. Looking at the replays, Havertz could have easily stood his ground and waited for the ball to score rather than moving ahead of the final defender.

Wright picked up on that mistake and shared his views on the forward, here’s what he said (h/t Metro):

“Havertz, just stay where you are! The ball is coming across there. You don’t need to go. If he just waits, just stay there you’ll be able to slide in and get it.

“The thing is you could see how much close he was to the goal. I can’t believe this is happening at this level!”

Aside from that, Havertz was not very active in the game and was eventually substituted in the 79th minute just after the equaliser from Japan.

This kind of performance is not surprising as a Chelsea fan, because the 23-year-old was not good for the Blues during the first half of this season when playing as the sole striker up front.

Kai Havertz is a crucial player for Germany.

Havertz only scored four goals in 20 appearances in all competitions for us, signalling his lack of form and consistency. We can only hope the defeat not only spurs Germany but the 23-year-old too.

Graham Potter would need the forward in good form ahead of the second half of this season. A good tournament on the world stage would be a much-needed confidence booster for the player.

More Chelsea News:

Havertz is someone who can go on a scoring run once he is back in form. He would hope for that to come soon.
