Chelsea told to pursue “controversial move” for this striker instead of Cristiano Ronaldo

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink tells Chelsea to focus on signing Harry Kane instead of Cristiano Ronaldo

Speaking to Grosvenor Casinos (h/t Football.London), former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has suggested the Blues focus on signing Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane instead of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has had his contract terminated at Manchester United by mutual consent following the explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

Chelsea were interested in signing him in the summer when he initially shared his ambitions of leaving Old Trafford. But, former manager Thomas Tuchel blocked the move. Since the contract termination this week, odds are in favour of the Blues revisiting a chance to sign the 37-year-old, but it does not seem likely as of now (Telegraph).

Here’s what Hasselbaink said when asked about who should Chelsea focus on signing (h/t Football.London):

“I would have done Ronaldo for Chelsea in the summer, for one year, but obviously now I think the priorities are bigger in the summer. I would try to persuade Kane to come.

“That would be a very controversial move, but surely he’s going to want to win things. Surely he knows he’s not going to win with Spurs.”

Kane has been linked with Chelsea since the summer window as the Blues aim to find a number nine who can score goals for them, unlike the previous few.

The England captain has 18 months left in his contract and chances of him extending in north London seem low. A few weeks ago, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson said that the club selling the striker for £88m in the summer would be good business (Express).

Kane turned 29 in the summer and has a few good years left in him. Ronaldo, on the other hand, is 37 and fast approaching the twilight of his career. Even though the latter may come for free transfer fee-wise, his contract demands would be magnanimous, to say the least.

Both players guarantee goals though, something Chelsea have lacked in abundance from their number nines in the last few years.

Since Kane won’t come before the summer if at all, one idea could be to sign Ronaldo for free now, add goals to the team for the rest of this season and then go big for the England captain in the summer.

We have known that co-owner Todd Boehly is not afraid to spend money. Maybe, this is the way to solve the current and future goal-scoring issues in the team.
