Speaking in the post-match press conference as quoted by Football. London, Chelsea boss Graham Potter has dismissed claims that the Blues players didn’t know what to do on the pitch against Arsenal in their defeat to the local rivals.
The journalist seemed to claim that the Chelsea players were clueless on the pitch last night and to be honest, his claims weren’t outlandish. The Blues looked like a team who just did not turn up mentally and should have lost by a bigger scoreline than they eventually did.
The Blues lost 1-0 to Arsenal after failing to defend a corner from Bukayo Saka which was eventually turned in by defender Gabriel Magalhaes after a goalmouth scramble. If not for the Gunners’ poor finishing, the Blues would have been trailing by much more.
After a good start to life under Potter, the wheels are coming off for the Blues. They have taken horrible defeats at the hands of Brighton and now Arsenal and this means that Potter’s good start to life as a Chelsea manager has quickly evaporated.
Losing a game is a different thing but the way Chelsea lost to Arsenal last night was utterly ridiculous. The Blues showed absolutely no interest to attack, go forward and score goals and just seemed to be moving through the paces.
When asked if his team actually did not know what to do on the pitch, Potter dismissed such claims and said that it wasn’t the case
“I don’t think that’s true.”
Potter might deny the claims but Chelsea did look like an utterly dysfunctional team out there. He will have to sort it out and make the Blues start playing proper football yet again. It may take time but displays like last night should not become a norm.
Potter will have a month and a half to work on his ideas and make the Blues play good football again. He is capable of doing that as we have seen with Brighton but it remains to be seen if he can do the same with Chelsea.
