Speaking in an interview after Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao cup as quoted by Daily Mail, Chelsea boss Graham Potter explained how his team have taken a ‘step forward’ despite losing the game against Pep Guardiola’s men last night.
Chelsea emerged second best to the high-flying Cityzens losing 2-0 with Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez scoring for the Manchester club. However, it was a far better performance from the Blues than the one that we saw against Arsenal last weekend.
Against Mikel Arteta’s side, Chelsea looked like an absolutely flat side with no energy. They did not look like they could compete with Arsenal even one bit and it was a performance that was shocking and almost worrying on so many different levels.
However, against Man City though, Chelsea looked like a far better team despite resting a number of key players. It was a welcome display from Potter’s side despite the fact that it ended in defeat. It showed that although they have some way to go before reaching the level of teams like City, they can still compete.
Potter went on to elucidate the fact that Man City’s goalie was their best player on the night and that his man of the match showed that Chelsea did play good attacking football and were just unlucky that they could not score as many goals.
Speaking about the performance, Potter felt that it was a step in the right direction despite the defeat and the elimination from the Carabao cup.
“Obviously we are disappointed with the result but in terms of how we played, we created some good chances and there was a better structure and a better performance level. The team looked closer to what we want it to look like”
Potter will be glad that the international break is coming after this weekend. He will get some time to work with the squad and instil his ideas into the players. The English manager will not have many players though but it is still positive.
Chelsea have had an indifferent first half to the season but they might actually end up having a good season if they can turn it around in the second half of the season. It is easier said than done though and only time will tell how Potter does at Chelsea.
