Club News: Wayne Rooney backs Chelsea playmaker Kai Havertz to have a good tournament at the FIFA World Cup

Former Manchester United forward and legend Wayne Rooney has backed Chelsea playmaker Kai Havertz to have a ‘good tournament’ at the FIFA World Cup this year.

Havertz has been called up by Hansi Flick for the tournament which begins this Sunday (20 November). This will be the 23-year-old’s first World Cup.

In his tournament preview for The Times (subscription required), the former United legend gave his opinion on multiple issues and believes that the German international will have a good tournament.

“Do not write off Germany. It was so interesting watching their Nations League game against England in September. We got back into the game and should have won it but in the first half Germany absolutely dominated.”

“Joshua Kimmich and Ilkay Gundogan were unbelievable. I think Kai Havertz will have a good tournament. The control Germany have in games will be crucial.”

The Chelsea midfielder joined the west London club in 2020 from German side Bayer Leverkusen. Since then, he has been a crucial player for the club and even scored the only goal in the final of the Champions League in 2021 to win his side the cup.

He has been crucial for Graham Potter too this season, playing in 20 games so far in all competitions, scoring four goals in the process. While his form has been questionable, he remains an important player for club and country.

Havertz is usually deployed as a centre-forward, though is actually an attacking midfielder by trade. The 23-year-old is also capable of playing in the wings, making him a very versatile forward similar like Rooney during his playing days.

Germany are one of the favourites to win the tournament this year. With Havertz likely to feature for his country in Qatar, can the 23-year-old Chelsea midfielder help Die Mannschaft win the tournament for the fifth time?
