Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has insisted that he has got the courage to take a penalty for his country England at the World Cup. This comes after the 23-year-old was named in Gareth Southgate’s squad.
Speaking to Express Sport, the Cobham graduate insisted that he will step up whenever his country requires and won’t shy from such a big responsibility.
“Anytime I get offered to take a penalty I will always take one no matter what’s happened with the others. It was the same when I was younger coming through the academy. If I miss, just want to take one again and try and put that right. Penalties can be so difficult. It can go either way. But yeah, I’d always put myself forward to take one and take that responsibility. Of course.”
Mount missed his penalty against Liverpool in the FA Cup final last season. The Reds went on to win the trophy, but that looks to have increased the confidence of the 23-year-old as he is now ready to step up for his country.
England have been very unlucky with penalty shoot-outs in their history. The Three Lions have won only just two of their shootouts over the years. The defeat against Italy in the European Championship last summer from the penalty shootout is still fresh in many minds.
The Chelsea midfielder was not involved in the shootout as he was bought off for Jack Grealish in the closing stages of the normal time. He did miss against Liverpool, but he seems to have put it behind him.
Captain Harry Kane is the one who takes penalties for his country and club. While he is one of the best in the world from the spot, Mount still has to improve a lot. Perhaps the Tottenham Hotspur striker will give the Chelsea midfielder some advice about converting from the spot.
Mount has been in good form for Chelsea this season. The midfielder will hope to continue his good run in Qatar too and help his country win the ultimate prize in the game. It would be some scene if the Cobham graduate’s penalty wins the World Cup for the Three Lions this year.
