A View From The Bridge

Chelsea attacker chooses between Ghana and England ahead of 2022 FIFA World Cup

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi snubs Ghana World Cup chance amid England hope

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi has snubbed Ghana’s approaches for the World Cup amid the hope that he will make it in the England squad in the future.

The 22-year-old, who is currently out on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, is focused on club football and getting better at his game while keeping options open to play for the Three Lions.

The winger, who is having a productive spell in Germany, is eligible to change nationalities through his parents and also because the three senior England caps he earned were before his 21st birthday.

After having a stop-start season last time around at Stamford Bridge under Thomas Tuchel, Hudson-Odoi was linked with a move away from Chelsea in the summer. Eventually, very late in the transfer window, he made a loan move to Leverkusen.

Incidentally, this is his first move away from the Blues of any sort since graduating through the youth academy to feature for the senior team.

If he continues his development and adds the final product to his game, there could be an opportunity awaiting him to represent England in the 2024 Euros or the next World Cup.

Hudson-Odoi hopes to continue playing for England in the future.

Hudson-Odoi possesses pace, directness with the ball and a good work ethic. He has lacked composure or experience in producing numbers in the final third, something that can be worked on as he further develops his game.

The 22-year-old is a great talent with a high ceiling of what he can become in the next few years. So, England football would be happy to know that he is ready to work on his game and wait for his chance to play for the Three Lions, rather than switching nationalities.

The player would be hoping to have a good time off during the World Cup, train hard and do well in the second half of this season before coming back to Chelsea in the summer.
