A View From The Bridge

“Listen”- Chelsea star at World Cup dismisses question about Cristiano Ronaldo transfer

Chelsea star Mason Mount dismisses talks of Cristiano Ronaldo transfer with focus on England

Speaking to a Portuguese journalist after England’s 6-2 win over IR Iran in the World Cup (h/t Mirror), Chelsea star Mason Mount dismisses the talks of the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo to Stamford Bridge, stating his full focus on the national team in Qatar.

After an explosive interview with Piers Morgan where he burnt a lot of bridges by criticising the current and past Manchester United players and the club’s training ground facilities, Ronaldo has now left the club after the termination of his contract was confirmed today.

In a statement, the Portuguese superstar shared his love for the United supporters but mentions it is time for a new challenge.

So, the 37-year-old will be free to join any club come the January transfer window. Chelsea were linked with him in the summer when he expressed his desire to leave, but former manager Thomas Tuchel blocked the move made by co-owner Todd Boehly (Metro).

Here’s what Mount said when the journalist was insistent on asking him a question about Ronaldo (h/t Mirror):

“Listen, I’m away with international and England at the moment so that’s all I’m focusing on. I’ve just played my first World Cup game, I’m not really thinking about too much else. I’m away with England.”

Mount is right in answering the question this way. He is not responsible for making transfers, nor he is with the Chelsea team at the moment. His full focus is on the World Cup with England.

Talking about Ronaldo, while he is a superstar of the game who has given us endless joy with incredible moments on the elite stage, he doesn’t seem like the same player as he was a few years ago.

But, it would be foolish to doubt a player of his quality and experience. If he has a good World Cup, you can’t help but think that Boehly would push to sign him in January. It depends on whether manager Graham Potter is in agreement with this happening or not.

Make no mistake, Chelsea need a goal-scorer in their team sooner rather than later. The Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang transfer on deadline day of the summer window hasn’t worked so far, while Kai Havertz and Armando Broja are not reliable goal-scoring options.

One thing Ronaldo guarantees is goals and plenty of them. Will Potter accept the lack of defensive work from the 37-year-old in trade with an increased amount of goals from his striker? Only time will tell.

More Chelsea News:

It is clear by now that Ronaldo left United because he was not happy with the standards at which the club was operating. If Chelsea show similar traits after signing him, things could ugly here as well. So, the Blues need to be careful of all the aspects before approaching his signature.
