Chelsea make breakthrough in contract negotiations with Mason Mount

In what will come as good news to Chelsea fans, the club is believed to have made a breakthrough in talks with midfielder Mason Mount over a new contract. This is according to The Athletic (subscription required).

The Blues have been in talks with the 23-year-old since September, but have had trouble coming to terms with the England international. Mount sees his current contract expire in 2024.

Mount is said to have rejected a seven-year deal offered by the club and there is also the stumbling block of the size of the salary. The 23-year-old is one of the lowest-paid players at the club, despite being a regular on the pitch.

However, the west London club believe that they made a breakthrough in the talks. There are still some details to finalise, but there is hope that the things could be concluded after another scheduled meeting in January and that the midfielder will sign.

It is hardly surprising to see the club be so calm and devoting their time to extend the player’s contract. Mount has been voted as club’s player of the year by the fans for the past two seasons, and has been a regular for all managers including Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel and now Graham Potter.

The midfielder has played in all 21 games so far this season in all competitions, scoring two goals and assisting another six in the process. While these numbers don’t do justice to him, his contribution on the pitch cannot be expressed in numerical value.

Also the player is just 23 and is yet to hit his prime. It would be a shame if the Blues cannot agree new terms with him and that he spends his prime years at another club, potentially even at a rival.

Mount is set to feature for England in the World Cup from next week. Fans will hope that he has a good tournament in Qatar and when he returns, the first thing he does is sign a new deal.
