According to Calciomercato (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are among the three Premier League clubs in the race to sign Juventus and France midfielder Adrien Rabiot.
London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are the others in the fray. The midfielder has his contract in Turin expiring at the end of this season (Transfermarkt).
It is reported that Juventus are struggling to meet the contract demands of the 27-year-old. As a result, from January onwards, he would be eligible to talk to foreign clubs and sign a pre-contract agreement for a summer arrival.
Rabiot was one of the star players in France’s opening game victory over Australia in the World Cup. He scored the equaliser and set up the second goal in a 4-1 win.
The former Paris-Saint Germain player is a versatile operator in midfield, having played in a defensive and wide midfield position throughout his career. For the French team, he is currently deployed in a double-pivot alongside Aurelien Tchouameni.
The 27-year-old is a midfielder with an eye for goal, having netted five times for Juventus in 16 appearances in all competitions this season.
There are no secrets behind Chelsea’s quest for additions in the central midfield department. Injuries and the contract situation of players in that area have left Graham Potter with very little to choose from in a condensed schedule this season.
If the Blues are to be competitive moving forward, they would need dynamic and versatile additions quickly. Rabiot can fill in one of the options, bearing in mind the club could either sign on a cut-price deal in January or for free next summer.
So, as much as financially he would be a great asset for Chelsea, the Frenchman has the qualities to be a regular in our team for years to come.
