A View From The Bridge

Chelsea have recall clause in Callum Hudson-Odoi contract, but it has an expiry date

Chelsea have a recall clause in the loan deal of Callum Hudson-Odoi that expires before Christmas

According to German outlet Kicker (h/t Football.London), Chelsea do have a January recall clause in the loan deal of Callum Hudson-Odoi that expires before Christmas.

Very late in the summer transfer window, Hudson-Odoi agreed on a season-long loan deal to join Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. Thomas Tuchel was Chelsea’s manager then, with Graham Potter only coming to the helm on 8 September.

He has done well so far for them, and current Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has made it clear that he would want the winger to stay at Leverkusen till the end of this season.

The 22-year-old, who, before this season never played anywhere outside of Chelsea, has made 15 appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen so far, scoring a goal and assisting one.

From Chelsea’s viewpoint, it would not be a bad idea to let Hudson-Odoi complete the full season in Germany before coming back to Stamford Bridge.

The winger rejected a chance to feature in the World Cup when Ghana offered him a place in the team. He instead focused on doing well at the club level and keeping the doors open for an England call-up in the future.

Leverkusen boss wants to keep hold of Hudson-Odoi for the whole of this season.

We should let him gain the experience of playing regularly in a team and also spending a whole season in a league away from England. These experiences will only help him develop as a player.

The Blues at the moment could do so by looking elsewhere in terms of adding more quality to their maligned forward line. They are missing a striker who can actually take chances and score goals. Certain Cristiano Ronaldo is linked following the termination of his Manchester United contract.

More Chelsea News:

As much as Hudson-Odoi is an exciting player who is liked by us, we can wait for him till the summer. The best-case scenario would be to let him stay in Germany and fulfil the reason why he went there – to get playing time and return a better, more polished player.
