Chelsea could be tempted to sign Spain and Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams in January window
According to Goal (h/t Football.London), Chelsea could be tempted to sign Atletico Bilbao wonderkid Nico Williams during the January transfer window.
The report also states that Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool are also in the race, while French champions Paris-Saint Germain are in the fray too.
Williams impressed many people in his two cameo appearances in the World Cup for Spain so far. He is a right winger by trade who can operate on the other side of the field as well.
The 20-year-old, who made his La Liga debut during the 2020/21 season but became a regular starter for Bilbao last season, is a youth product of this club having joined them from Osasuna in 2013.
His contract with Bilbao expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). It is revealed that a club interested in signing would need to pay a release clause of £43m.
Williams scored four goals and assisted four in 15 appearances in all competitions for Bilbao during the first half of this season. The 20-year-old has an abundance of pace, great dribbling skills and good final product delivery, although he can improve on that the more experience he gains.
With the future of Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic in doubt during the January window, it might be worth a try to sign Williams. The youngster has the talent to show that is capable of playing for one of the best clubs in Europe. Him gaining experience in the World Cup would be invaluable as well.

We have lacked quality and decisiveness in the final third this season. To an extent, raw pace to scare the opposition defence is lacking as well. Williams can bring excitement and pace to the Blues’ forward line. He is young and can grow under the coaching of Graham Potter as well.
