As per their Tweet, Chelsea have congratulated defender Gary Cahill on an amazing career after the former Blues superstar announced his retirement today.
The 36-year-old spent seven-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge after joining from Bolton Wanderers in January 2012. He was an Aston Villa youth product before playing for Sheffield United, Burnley and Bolton.
He made a total of 290 appearances for the Blues, scoring 25 goals and assisting seven, having played all of his games as a centre-back, be it in a three-man or a four-man defence.
The former England international won eight major titles with Chelsea – two Premier Leagues, one Champions League, two Europa Leagues, two FA Cups and one League Cup (now called the Carabao Cup).
Cahill is a certified Chelsea legend who always used to come up with big performances when required. He was a team man who would give everything on the pitch to make the team win at all costs.
During the 2014/15 season under Jose Mourinho, he formed an incredible centre-back partnership with former captain John Terry that became the basis for the team lifting the Premier League that year.
Two years later under Antonio Conte, Cahill was a part of a three-man central defence as the Blues lifted the English top-flight title once again.
He played the whole 120 minutes against Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League final that was won by Chelsea on penalty shootouts.
Since moving on from Stamford Bridge in 2019, Cahill spent two seasons at Crystal Palace before moving to Bournemouth in the summer of 2021. There also he played a key role in getting the Cherries back to the Premier League before leaving them this summer.
With regards to his national team career, the 36-year-old made 61 appearances for England, playing in two World Cups and one European Championship.
Now, Gary Cahill calls it quits on an incredible career, and the Blues faithful will wish him nothing but the best for the next chapter in his life – whatever it may be.
