International Watch: Chelsea ace makes World Cup squad for South American heavyweights

Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva named by Brazil manager Tite in 26-man Qatar World Cup squad

Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva has been named by Brazil national team head coach Tite in the 26-man World Cup squad set to travel to Qatar, via AP correspondent Mauricio Savarese on Twitter (h/t football.london).

The Selecao will begin their quest for one of football’s most prestigious trophies on November 24 versus Serbia. Group G also includes Switzerland and Cameroon.

Brazil have won the World Cup a record five times. However, their last triumph came in 2002, when South Korea and Japan were the hosts. The Selecao beat Germany 2-0 in the final at the International Stadium in Yokohama.

Since then, the best the South American nation have done is reach the semi-finals in 2014 in Brazil. Unfortunately, it was an infamous day for Brazil as they lost 7-1 to Germany.

In the previous edition of the tournament in Russia, they made it to the quarter-finals, where the Selecao were beaten by Belgium.

Silva has been an ever-present in Brazil’s starting lineup since the 2011 Copa America. The 38-year-old lifted the Confederations Cup as captain of his national team in 2013. The Selecao also won Copa America in 2019.

The centre-back made his way to Chelsea in the summer of 2020 as a free agent. He had spent eight years at Paris Saint-Germain prior to his arrival in West London.

And since Silva has joined the Stamford Bridge side, he has been one of our best players. The Brazilian finally won the Champions League in the 2020/21 season as the Blues beat Manchester City in the final.

While we have been underwhelming in the current campaign, Silva has still been quality. Thus, it is not a surprise for fans to see the 38-year-old play another edition of the World Cup.
