AC Milan seem to be a club that are holding an interest in more than one Chelsea player. They have recently been linked with moves for Hakim Ziyech and Armando Broja, as per Evening Standard.
Now, according to Calciomercato, as quoted by Sports Illustrated (h/t Football.London), Serie A champions AC Milan are admirers of Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The Blues have the option to extend his contract by a year.
The Englishman’s contract at Stamford Bridge currently expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). Chelsea have the option to extend that till 2025. Co-owner Todd Boehly is willing to exercise that option.
However, as per Football.London, Milan informed the Chelsea hierarchy of their interest in the 26-year-old back in October when the two clubs met in the Champions League group stage.
Loftus-Cheek was dealt with unfortunate news when he was left out of the England squad for the World Cup. He did pick up an injury in the final league game before the tournament against Newcastle United. Although that injury did not make any changes as the national team squad was announced days before that game.
After years of being on the fringes and plying his trade on loan at Crystal Palace and Fulham, the 26-year-old has had a regular run in the team this season.
He already has made 20 appearances in all competitions during the first half of the season, 12 of them coming from the start. The performance levels haven’t been consistent, but at least he is getting the opportunity to settle into the team and slowly get better.
Chelsea have a decision to make regarding the future of the midfielder. As stated in the report, it seems as if Boehly is willing to exercise the option of making him stay one more year. Does manager Graham Potter concur with that? It remains to be seen.
The good thing about Loftus-Cheek is that along with his innate quality, his versatility is a massive plus. The latter is an invaluable addition to any squad. We may want to see more of him in the coming months and years.
