“Not important”- Leicester City defender has no regrets about turning down Chelsea switch

Wout Faes has no regrets about rejecting Chelsea in the past

Speaking to the Guardian, Leicester City defender Wout Faes has no regrets about rejecting an offer from Chelsea when he was at Anderlecht in his mid-teens.

Faes arrived at Leicester City from French side Stade Reims on the deadline day of the summer transfer window. He has played three games for the Foxes so far and looked decent despite the team’s results not being very encouraging.

The 24-year-old has a hairstyle quite similar to former Chelsea defender David Luiz. The Blues sent him a signed shirt from Luiz and made an offer for him after seeing him play in a tournament in Scotland representing the Belgium U17s.

Here’s what Faes said regarding his rejection to join Chelsea at a very young age (h/t Guardian):

“They [Chelsea] called me and they wanted to have me but I never really thought to go, because I knew at Anderlecht I was [in a] very, very good [place]. Maybe if I had gone there, maybe I would have got more money but that was not important. I wanted to have the best education and I knew at Anderlecht they were really counting on me and saw me as a future talent. It was more important to stay there and progress there. I never thought: ‘I should have gone to Chelsea.’ I have no regrets to not have signed there.”

Faes is a popular character in the Leicester dressing room just a month after his arrival at the club. He has developed into an attack-minded centre-back who is courageous on the ball and likes to be on the front foot when facing opposition attackers.

To be fair to him, it is a bold move to reject Chelsea despite knowing the financial boom it would have given him. Moreover, the Blues have one of the best academies in the world producing top young talents on a yearly basis. So, that might have been a missed opportunity for him.

The Belgian international has the attributes to do well in England. He needs to continue building on a promising start at Leicester to help his team and raise his stock among the top clubs in the league.

More Chelsea News:

At the moment, Chelsea have enough quality at the back to have another look at the 24-year-old. But, we do not know what will happen in the future.
