Transfer News: Chelsea eye Wolves star as a potential backup to Reece James

Wolverhampton Wanderers full-back Nelson Semedo considered by Chelsea as an alternative to Reece James

Chelsea are considering making a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers full-back Nelson Semedo, according to Simon Phillips on GiveMeSport (h/t football.london). The Blues are looking at the Portugal international as an alternative to Reece James.

The England international is the first choice at Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately, the right-back picked up an injury against AC Milan in the Champions League. The defender played a little over an hour before having to be withdrawn in the 2-0 victory over the Rossoneri.

Semedo joined Wolves in the summer of 2020 from Barcelona. The 28-year-old failed to make a mark in Catalunya and made his way to West Midlands. Unfortunately, he has lost his place in the team this season.

The Portugal international was a regular in the previous two campaigns. However, in the 2022/23 season, the right-back has started six of the 11 games he has played in the Premier League.

Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been tried at the right-wing-back position in the current campaign. Cesar Azpilicueta is also a more natural option for the role.

However, none of them are as dynamic as James. The England international is one of the best players in the squad. His qualities shine in the forward as well as defensive areas of the pitch.

Reece James is an important player for Chelsea.

James has featured 11 times for Chelsea in the current campaign in all competitions. The 22-year-old has scored two goals and provided two assists this season.

Unfortunately, injuries have plagued the right-back. Even in the previous campaign, the defender was on a good run before being forced to the sidelines. Subsequently, the Blues’ performances also dropped last season with his absence.

More Chelsea News:

Therefore, it is evidently imperative that the club get someone capable of replacing James when need be. It remains to be seen whether Graham Potter hedges his bets on Semedo in the coming transfer windows.
