Former AC Milan and Italian midfielder Massimo Ambrosini has suggested that Chelsea target Rafael Leao should cost more than Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish.
The Blues’ interest in the Portuguese winger is no secret. The Blues were heavily linked with the 23-year-old throughout the summer, but no move could materialise.
However, the west London club are still interested in the winger and is said to be monitoring the 23-year-old’s contract situation closely. Leao sees his current contract expire in 2024, but the Rossoneri are in talks for a new contract.
The winger is believed to have a €150 million release clause in his contract. But there have been no indications from the west London club that they will be paying such a clause.
Now, former Milan midfielder Ambrosini believes that his former side should not settle for anything less than what Pep Guardiola paid to sign Grealish.
Manchester City paid £100 million to Aston Villa to secure the signature of the 27-year-old England international. Speaking to Tuttosport, as quoted by Football Italia (h/t Football. London), the former Italian midfielder gave his suggestion on the price tag for Leao.
“I don’t like to talk about this, but if Manchester City paid €117m (£101.8m) for Jack Grealish…”
Leao would make an excellent signing for the Blues. A three up-front of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Raheem Sterling and the 23-year-old could make the Blues attack one of the best in England and Europe.
With Milan in talks to extend the Portuguese’s contract, it will be wise for Chelsea to step up their pursuit of the winger. It remains to be seen if the west London club can secure his signature in January or next summer.
