Romano: Joe Shields joining Chelsea as part of the recruitment team is a done deal

As per a tweet from Transfer Expert Fabrizio Romano, Joe Shields joining Chelsea to become a part of the recruitment deal is a done deal now. The deal was sealed and finalised on Wednesday.

Shields was a part of the Southampton backroom staff as a chief scout before agreeing to join the Blues. He was working with Manchester City as a Youth Chief Scout till July. So, he stayed on the south coast for roughly three months.

The news of the initial approach by Chelsea did catch Southampton off guard as they hired the 35-year-old as they were kept in the dark about the situation. They told him to stay away from the stadium and the training facility as a result. Now, as it stands, Shields is on his way to Cobham.

It is also revealed that the hiring process at Chelsea is not stopping here. They are in talks with Christopher Vivell to complete his hiring as a technical director. They are looking to hire a sporting director as well soon.

Blues co-owner Todd Boehly has been an active part of the club’s hiring process behind the scenes. He even worked as an interim sporting director in the summer transfer window to get the player deals over the line. He won’t back down from that role if the club does not hire a sporting director before the January window.

Having spent around £250m in the summer on player buys, the American is keen on backing the current manager Graham Potter financially in the coming transfer windows. With the appointment and potential hiring of key personnel in the backroom staff on the cards, he is doing his best to help the club have a proper footballing structure.
