“It’s been challenging”- Crystal Palace boss backs Chelsea midfielder to fight for his place in the team

Patrick Vieira backs Conor Gallagher to keep fighting for his spot in the Chelsea team

Speaking in the press conference ahead of the game against Chelsea (h/t Evening Standard), Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira backs midfielder Conor Gallagher to keep fighting to show the manager that he wants to get in the team regularly.

Gallagher spent the last season on loan at Crystal Palace, where he was working under Vieira. The 22-year-old had a fantastic season with performances of high order on a consistent level. The Eagles were keen to sign him on a permanent basis this summer, but Chelsea kept hold of their prized asset.

The England international has made a slow start to the season, with a red card against Leicester City and an underwhelming show against Leeds United has pushed him back in the midfield pecking order.

Here’s what Vieira suggested the player to do (h/t Evening Standard):

“It’s been challenging for him because he hasn’t played as much as he was expecting. He has to keep fighting & showing the manager that he wants to get into the team.”

Chelsea play Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park this weekend and the Palace manager is confident that the fans at the stadium will give Gallagher a good round of appreciation.

With N’Golo Kante ruled out for the game, it remains to be seen whether the 22-year-old will get a start in midfield. It is highly doubtful though with the availability of Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount and co.

For Gallagher, it is about being patient and working on the training pitch to earn the trust of the manager. He showed last season how talented he is. It is a matter of time before he delivers that for Chelsea.

Potter is a type of manager who is not hesitant in giving chances to young players. He is a good man-manager too, which could be helpful while working with the young midfielder.

More Chelsea News:

The Blues play 13 times in the next 42/43 days starting this weekend. So, squad rotation will be at the centre of team selections in this hectic period. Hence, there will be opportunities for the likes of Gallagher to play games and showcase their worth in the team.
