A View From The Bridge

Player News: Chelsea expected to hold further talks to extend this key midfielder’s contract

Mason Mount contract extension talks drags on as Chelsea expected to hold further talks

According to the Telegraph (Subscription Required), Chelsea are expected to hold further talks of a contract extension with star player Mason Mount after the discussions had been dragging on for some time with no agreement.

Mount’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer of 2024. So, he has one full season after this left in his current terms at the club.

Talks of an extension have been going on since the summer, but no agreement is reached yet. Although there is an expectation that the England international will sign the new deal, there is also an acceptance that it could take some time.

Mason Mount’s current Chelsea contract ends in 2024.

As part of a potential contingency plan, if things do not go as planned, Chelsea are looking at AS Roma attacking midfielder and captain Lorenzo Pellegrini and Villarreal winger Yeremy Pino. The fact that Mount can play in both positions and perform well is a testament to how useful he is to the Blues.

The 23-year-old has started every game in the new era under Graham Potter. He was one of the key cogs under Thomas Tuchel as well. So, there isn’t any doubt that he is a stalwart of the team in a way.

After making a slow start to the season, Mount has looked somewhere close to his best in the last few games, especially after the international break. The club should do everything to make him sign that contract sooner rather than later.

Dragging this till the summer will entice other top clubs to plant their toe in the thinking of the player. The academy product has the potential to be a Chelsea legend and has already shown traits of being a future captain of the club, and he could take over once Cesar Azpilicueta leaves.

More Chelsea News:

There is no question that the Blues should be looking to tie him down on better terms. A pay rise will also not be a surprise, given he is allegedly one of the lowest earners in terms of weekly wages at the Bridge.
