Jorginho seeks pay rise after Chelsea made contract offer to the midfielder
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea and Jorginho have been unable to find an agreement in early negotiations for a contract extension, with the midfielder seeking a pay rise.
The Italian international is currently in the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge. If no agreement is reached, he can leave the club as a free agent next summer. He can also begin talking to foreign clubs from January 1 onwards.
Chelsea offered him an extension with terms and salary similar to his current £120,000-per-week. The club’s vice-captain, however, wants the pay to be in line with captain Cesar Azpilicueta, who in his recent contract extension got a salary of £150,000-per-week.
The good thing is that Jorginho wants to stay at the club beyond next summer. However, the midfielder’s demand for doing so is that he is seen as a key senior figure in the team for years to come, and that should be reflected in the wages.
Whether co-owner Todd Boehly and his team would agree to those demands, only time will tell. Looking at the 30-year-old, he is an experienced player with quality on the ball and has an unnerving penalty-taking technique.
At this moment in time, the 2021 Euros winner is showing no signs of slowing down because of his age. In fact, he has been a key figure in Chelsea’s recent upturn in form by controlling the midfield.
Keeping all that in mind and also remembering how important Jorginho was in the 2021 Champions League triumph, Chelsea should find a way to crack the code and find an agreement with the player over a contract extension.

With Italy not in the World Cup, the 30-year-old will have enough rest after these many games in short succession to recover and continue to be an important player in the team. What it will do is potentially not hinder his performance levels throughout this season.
