A View From The Bridge

“They are learning”- Chelsea cult hero praises new owners for hands-on approach at the club

Joe Cole impressed by the new Chelsea owners and backs them to succeed at the club

Speaking to Football.London when asked about the new Chelsea owners, former Blues winger Joe Cole has been impressed with the way Todd Boehly and co are working and has backed them to bring success to the club.

A lot has been made of the decisions made by the new owners after the takeover from Roman Abramovich in May. The sacking of manager Thomas Tuchel a week after the transfer window deadline was at the heart of it. Boehly suggesting an All-Stars game to benefit the finances of the English was met with a hurricane backlash it seemed.

However, Cole, who was with Chelsea for a pre-season week in Los Angeles, spoke about the enthusiasm he felt after the conversation with owners Boehly, Behdad Eghbaly and Jose Feliciano.

Here’s what the former Blues winger said (h/t Football.London):

“It doesn’t seem like a hedge fund buying a club and it’s all about the bottom line. It doesn’t seem like that kind of model. They want to be involved, are passionate, and they want to be successful.”

“They are learning and constantly asking questions. They bring a lot of wisdom to the table and a lot of business acumen. But they are humble enough to listen, learn, and understand Chelsea.”

Though, it feels as if the club is undergoing a transition phase, it is nice to see the people at the top are involved in the decision-making and are always looking to make things better.

There has been no shortage of financial backing as well with regard to adding players to the squad. Chelsea spent nearly £250m in the summer and Boehly is targeting more of the same next summer as well.

Their appointment of Graham Potter can be a questionable decision if things do not go well. But, Cole is convinced that the Englishman is going to bring something different to the table and urged the fans to strap in and be ready for the ride.

Potter has taken charge of two games so far, winning one and drawing the other. His managerial skills will be tested to the core with games every 3-4 days until the start of the World Cup break.

On the other hand, the owners seek stability and consistent success at the club. Even if it takes a period of instability to get there, the fans should be patient and wait for the final product to come out.
