A View From The Bridge

“He worries me”- Kalidou Koulibaly told what he has to “learn” to improve at Chelsea

Jason Cundy reveals his worry about Chelsea centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly

Speaking on talkSPORT Radio (h/t Metro), former Premier League defender Jason Cundy has revealed his worry for Chelsea centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly after a mixed-bag performance against AC Milan on Wednesday in the Champions League.

Cundy, who has played for Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur apart from other English clubs, has said that Koulibaly needs to learn that he cannot win every single duel, hence stay away from diving in to win the ball back every single time.

The Senegal international, who won the AFCON 2022, has made a slow start to life at Stamford Bridge since the summer move from Napoli. While the radio pundit is right about the player, he needs to be given time to adjust to a new league, which can for some players take a lot of time.

Here’s what a ‘worried’ Cundy said about Koulibaly (h/t Metro):

“Koulibaly still worries me, he worries me. On the ball he’s actually a really good, technical footballer. Out of possession, he dives in, he commits challenges, he’s too aggressive.

“There’s a part of his game that he needs to work on and understand he can’t win every single ball. He’s got to learn that.”

This is not a direct criticism of the player per se. It is more about a pundit, who is a Chelsea fan, wanting one of his players to do well the way he did for Napoli for a considerable period of time.

The 31-year-old is yet to show his true colours in a Blue jersey. But, we know he has got the experience and background in the game to understand what he needs to do better to get back in form.

Koulibaly is such a high-class player that a sequence of events done well by him in a match could raise his game to the level we all know about.

By hurrying decisions, which the Senegalese is suspected to be doing, he is not going to help himself. There is no point in over-committing just to impress his new employers. His natural game is enough to attract the attention of any football team owner.
