A View From The Bridge

Graham Potter sweats on Chelsea newboy’s injury following AC Milan win

Chelsea manager Graham Potter unsure about the severity of Wesley Fofana injury

Speaking after the game against AC Milan which was won by Chelsea (h/t Evening Standard), manager Graham Potter admitted that the injury to Wesley Fofana dampened the mood on what was otherwise a fantastic night for the Blues.

The French defender, who started the game and scored the opening goal in an eventual 3-0 win for the team, gingerly walked off the pitch before half-time after jarring his knee in a tackle duel. He left Stamford Bridge with crutches on the right knee, potentially spelling unfortunate news for the player.

Though Potter is tight-lipped until the full extent of the injury is found, the manager does not rule out major damage, if at all. Here’s what he said):

“We’ll have to scan it tomorrow and see how it is.

“Nothing to report at the moment but that’s the one disappointing thing of the evening.”

There are plenty of games coming up for Chelsea this month and the early parts of the next. So, even if this injury keeps the defender out for say – four to six weeks, it would be enough for him to miss up to 10-12 games.

Fofana wanted to make a statement by coming to Stamford Bridge to garner himself in contention for the France World Cup for the tournament taking place in Qatar next month. This injury must be a huge setback with regard to those ambitions.

For Chelsea, they have good enough players in the reserve for Potter to use and get through the games. Club captain Cesar Azpilicueta and Trevoh Chalobah are natural options while Reece James can fill in as a right-sided centre-back too.

More Chelsea News:

It was Chalobah who came on for the former Leicester City man and did a solid job for the remainder of the game. With him struggling for game time this season, the injury to Fofana could be a blessing for the Englishman.
