According to The Daily Mail, Chelsea manager Graham Potter has given a frank appraisal of his side’s attack following their 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United.
The Blues are yet to experience defeat under Potter but two consecutive draws in the Premier League have set back their hopes of rising up the standings. Dropping four points is never good, especially given the competitive nature of the top flight.
Chelsea were far from the better side on the night but looked set for a win courtesy of Jorginho’s 87th-minute spot-kick. Unfortunately for us, the defence could not see the game out and Casemiro stole a draw in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
While Potter praised his side for their fighting spirit and adaptability to new formations, he wants the attack to do more. This is understandable given that Jorginho’s goal came from our only shot on target in the game. It is a worrying statistic given that we were playing at home against a side that can be considered a direct rival.
“We were sort of nearly there but lacked the last ‘bits’ and I think there’s an area that we can do better in terms of our attacking play.”
Potter’s concerns are valid and the Blues need to be more clinical in front of the goal. The task, however, is not easy given that we let go of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner in the summer without bringing in any replacements.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang started the game against Man United as the striker but found little joy. A lack of imagination was prevalent, especially while going forward. With the winter transfer window approaching, the Blues will do well to add a goalscorer who can help them negotiate the business end of the campaign.
There will be far harder tests for us than Man United and those games are likely to be decided by individual moments of brilliance. As long as we have an infallible goalscorer in the box, there is every chance that we can capitalise on small openings.
The game was a tactical game of chess where Potter reacted well to Erik ten Hag’s moves. His decision to withdraw Marc Cucurella for Mateo Kovacic in the midfield was an inspired move that saw us dent Man United’s early dominance. It is fair to say that Potter is a man with a plan and knows exactly what he wants from his players.
