Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford an alternative as future of Edouard Mendy at Chelsea ‘unclear’
Chelsea have an eye on Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as an alternative for Edouard Mendy, according to transfer expert Simon Phillips (h/t Express). The Senegal international’s future with the Blues is ‘unclear’.
Thus, the Merseyside club’s shot-stopper has emerged as someone Chelsea are keeping an eye on. Graham Potter has the England international in his sights. However, the 28-year-old is not the only one being considered.
Chelsea are thinking about making a move for Pickford. The Evertonian has put in impressive displays over the years for club and country. And the 28-year-old is also attracting interest from Manchester United.
The Blues signed Mendy in 2020. And the Senegalese ousted Kepa Arrizabalaga for the number one spot. Chelsea have seen a lot of success with the 30-year-old in between the sticks.
Mendy was an important part of the Blues side that went to lift the Champions League in the 2020/21 season. The Senegalese continued to perform well for the Stamford Bridge side. However, towards the end of the previous campaign, he made some errors.
And Mendy has continued his struggle in goal this season. The 30-year-old has not looked assured on the ball. Chelsea have not been the best defensively either.
Pickford is an established international. The 28-year-old has represented the Three Lions in the previous major tournaments. During the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020, the shot-stopper was Gareth Southgate’s preferred choice.
For Everton, Pickford has been vital in the last couple of campaigns. Last season, against Chelsea at Goodison Park, the 28-year-old made some outrageous saves to help his side to a 1-0 victory.
