The final confirmed Chelsea squad to face Wolverhampton Wanderers (or Wolves) in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge is revealed with expected absentees Wesley Fofana and N’Golo Kante (h/t Football.London).
While the performance and result in the midweek against AC Milan was perfect, Graham Potter’s men suffered a setback when Fofana went off injured in the first half. He was seen leaving the stadium on crutches. Although the good news is that the Frenchman hasn’t suffered a long-term injury.
Kante, on the other hand, has not yet been declared fit enough to be available for selection. The 31-year-old was back in training last week before the Crystal Palace game, but Potter wants the player to be completely fit before he selects him for the games.
Marc Cucurella, who recovered from his illness and was on the bench on Wednesday, could be back in contention to start in defence. Trevoh Chalobah, who deputised for Fofana that night, may get a game from the start on the right-hand side of the central defence.
Kai Havertz and Jorginho did not start against Milan but came off the bench as they had muscle issues. They are now back in the race to start the game against a Wolves team who are without a manager at the moment following the sacking of Bruno Lage.
After scoring a stunning winner against Crystal Palace in the previous league game, Conor Gallagher must be banging at the manager’s door to start this game. With Jorginho back and Mateo Kovacic playing well, the Englishman may have to do with a place on the bench once again.
Up front, we can expect Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to continue his recently-found good form. We don’t really have a lot of other options anyway after the departures of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner this summer.
Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling have featured as centre-forward earlier this season but hopefully, that experiment stops even if the latter was finding the net on occasions.
Here’s the confirmed squad for the game (h/t Football.London):
Goalkeepers: Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Marcus Bettinelli.
Defenders: Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Kalidou Koulibaly, Malang Sarr, Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Cucurella.
Midfielders: Jorginho, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Conor Gallagher, Denis Zakaria.
Forwards: Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling, Armando Broja, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
