Graham Potter hopes Wolves’ Diego Costa receives positive reception on Chelsea return
Chelsea boss Graham Potter hopes that Diego Costa will receive a positive reception when he returns to Stamford Bridge this Saturday as a Wolverhampton Wanderers player.
The former Spanish international will return to west London after enjoying a successful four and half-year spell at the club. He joined the Blues in the summer of 2014 for £32 million from Atletico Madrid.
He went on to make 120 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 59 goals in the process. The two-time Premier League winner then returned to Atletico in January 2018 for £57million.
Costa then had a brief stint with Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro last season and then made an unlikely return to the Premier League with Wolves last month.
The 34-year-old who had become a cult hero at west London left on a very sour note after being frozen out by then-manager Antonio Conte. The striker vowed never to return but will travel back to his old club tomorrow (October 8).
In an interview quoted in the Evening Standard, Potter hopes that the striker will get a good reception from the fans. He also said that he has a lot of respect for the former Blues player.
“We have a lot of respect for him and his career. He’s at Wolves and he’s going to come and be ready to play. I followed his career from afar and I’ve got a lot of respect for him. They have a lot of good attacking players so we have to be ready.”
Costa could start from the bench but him starting against us cannot be ruled out. A strong aerial presence coupled with a powerful shot makes him a tough man to mark for defenders.
While his side has struggled in the league so far, the Blues have been in good form and have won their last two games in all competitions. He made his debut as a substitute in Wolves’ 2-0 loss against West Ham United earlier this month.

However, we will not have Wesley Fofana in our ranks to help us alleviate the threat from the former Atletico Madrid striker. Kalidou Koulibaly hasn’t had a smooth start to life at the Bridge but now could be the time to make his mark.
