Chelsea and England right-back Reece James has refused to rule himself out of the World Cup next month despite being sidelined with a knee injury.
The 22-year-old picked up an injury during his side’s 2-0 win against AC Milan in the Champions League earlier this month. The defender is still on crutches, while his knee remains in a brace.
Graham Potter had earlier said that the knee injury was a serious one and it could see the Cobham graduate out for eight weeks, which has put his World Cup hopes in jeopardy.
Speaking to The Sun (h/t Daily Mail), the 22-year-old revealed he has not given up hope and will try to get fit by the time the tournament starts next month.
“I need to keep working hard over the next few weeks and see where I am on call-up day. I will try and not rule myself out. It is still slow and in the early stages. I have been in rehab for two weeks, so I am still taking it day-by-day. It is going to be very tough. It is an injury which could take a long time and it came at an awkward period but I am trying my best and hopefully it is possible and if it is not, I know I tried everything.”
England boss Gareth Southgate will name his final 26-man squad on November 10 and James hopes to be on that list. It would really be a shame and loss for the Three Lions should the Blues defender miss the tournament.
James has by far been one of the best players for his side this season. The 22-year-old has established himself as one of the best in his position and was in fine form this season before the injury struck him.
Had he not picked up the injury, the Blues defender would likely have been the first-choice for his country. Southgate could still take him to Qatar and hope to use him in the latter stages of the tournament given that the Three Lions reach there.
It remains to be seen if the right-back can get fit on time. It is a race against time and the defender seems to be on the losing side. Fans will hope that the 22-year-old can make it as his presence on the pitch will without doubt be a boost for his country.
