According to Metro, Chelsea manager Graham Potter wants to have a clear-the-air talk with loaned-out striker Romelu Lukaku. The new boss has not ruled out the possibility of the Belgian international coming back to play for the Blues after finishing his loan spell.
Lukaku was signed by Chelsea from Inter Milan in the summer of 2021. However, his comeback season at Stamford Bridge did not go well under Thomas Tuchel. As a result, he was loaned back to the Italian side in the summer.
The 29-year-old giving a cryptic interview in the middle of last season to openly express his desire to go back to Inter was met with disappointment by the Chelsea fans. It is also reported that he would be happy to stay at San Siro on a permanent basis, but the current loan deal does not have an obligation to buy.
All that happened when Tuchel was the manager of the Blues though. The change of guard has taken place here which could tempt Lukaku to come back and give it another shot in West London. Inter chief Giuseppe Marotta has admitted that he doesn’t know the future of the player, especially after the change in manager at Chelsea.
It would be sensible for Potter to hold talks with the striker, share his plans with him and see how he reacts. As much as last season was close to a disaster from him in a blue shirt, the Serie A champion with Inter is a quality striker who can contribute a lot more than what he showed in his second spell as a Chelsea player.
It would also be interesting to know whether there has been a change in stance from the 29-year-old regarding his future at Stamford Bridge.
Currently, Chelsea have Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Armando Broja as their options to lead the line. The former is 33 and the latter is a prospect for the future. They need more additions to this department next summer. Or maybe get one of their players back from loan and make him play well under the new manager.
