Speaking on BeIN Sports (h/t Metro), Chelsea legend John Terry has written off the club’s chances of winning the Premier League title this season and believes that it will be a big ask for the club to win any of the cup competitions as well.
Even though Chelsea are eight points behind leaders Arsenal with a game in hand, the former defender and multiple league winner with the Blues believes that winning the league is not a realistic aim for the club this season.
This is despite the fact that we managed to win against Crystal Palace via a late Conor Gallagher goal at Selhurst Park. That win put us at 13 points from seven games, which could be four less than Manchester City if we win our game in hand.
Here’s what the 41-year-old said (h/t Metro):
It’s been five years since we won the Premier League. Is that going to change this year? No. So you’re looking at the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, European Cup… it’s going to be tough.
When asked whether the Chelsea job is too big for Potter, Terry was vehement in his response that the Englishman did well at Brighton and Hove Albion and that everyone respects him on the training pitch.
Potter won his first league game in charge, beating Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. The tests will keep on coming though in this period of a high volume of games before the World Cup. Up next, he has to prepare his team to face the Italian champions AC Milan in a must-win game at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League.
Chelsea are currently at the bottom of their European group after two games. Hence, the two games against Milan, starting on Wednesday at home, beg of the highest importance. The last thing the manager would want is an early exit from the group stages and mounting pressure upon himself and externally.
With regard to the league, Terry is right. Defending champions Manchester City are way ahead of any other team in the league. Notwithstanding a collapse or a sudden turn of events, Pep Guardiola’s men should retain the title once again.
So, Potter must focus on doing well in cup competitions and finishing fourth in the league so that the attraction of Champions League football is there next summer too. However, one cannot excuse not competing for trophies in this campaign by calling it a season of transition.
We spent well in the summer. The club then decided to sack Tuchel and get in a manager not experienced when it comes to fighting for the biggest titles. This is a decision that Todd Boehly and co took and any failure of the club this season should be levelled against their decision as well. No pressure, Potter!
