Speaking to the media ahead of the AC Milan game (h/t Evening Standard), Chelsea defender Thiago Silva gives a verdict of his contract situation while revealing that his family will have a say on it and there will be a time to talk about this in the near future.
The 38-year-old, who arrived in 2020 from Paris Saint-Germain, is having his contract expire at Stamford Bridge in the coming summer. He already has had two one-year contract extensions since his first season at the club. Whether he makes that third extension happen remains to be seen.
Irrespective of his age, Silva continues to produce top-level performances for the Blues and remains an irreplaceable player in the team.
Here’s what the defender said regarding his future (h/t Evening Standard):
“It is probably not the right time to talk about contracts.
“What I can tell you is, for me it is important to continue playing at the highest level and help the team achieve the highest possible results.
“The time will come to talk and it could be time before or after the World Cup. I need to decide my contract for my family arrangements and it is not easy. We will see what will happen.”
When manager Graham Potter was asked about Silva’s quality and how long he can last, the Englishman labelled the player ‘incredible’ while leaving the decision of his future up to him and the club.
The career and experience the defender has had are incomparable. What he can bring to the field is quality combined with the utmost knowledge of the game. So, he is mostly one step ahead of any attacker in the world.
As much as age is a factor, the player has so far shown that it is certainly not a barrier. We won’t be surprised if he extends and plays another season at a high level.
On the other hand, it would also be understandable if he leaves to go back to his home country to settle his family down.
From Chelsea’s viewpoint though, they should put their best foot forward in terms of making sure that the 38-year-old is offered all the right things for a potential contract extension.
