Speaking in the press conference ahead of the game against Manchester United (h/t Football.London), Chelsea manager Graham Potter has been impressed with the form of defender Trevoh Chalobah and also weighed up on the player’s chances of making it in the England squad for the World Cup.
After not starting games in the early parts of this season, Chalobah has become one of the ever-presents in the team in the last few games. The injury to Wesley Fofana in the game against AC Milan has paved the way for the Englishman to stake his claim for a regular place in the team.
The 23-year-old has been in great form, having helped the team keep five consecutive clean sheets. He would be hoping to continue that streak in the upcoming matches.
Talking about his form and prospects of getting selected for the England World Cup squad, here’s Potter (h/t Football.London):
“I’ve been very impressed from day one. He wasn’t starting in the first couple of games but acted perfectly. He is an impressive character, very focused on his football. He wants to play the game and wants Chelsea to win. We’ve had some problems but has stood up for us. He is performing at a really good level.
He is playing every week for us so there is a decision for Gareth to make, not me.”
England does have an issue in central defence going into the tournament, with Harry Maguire out of form, John Stones nursing an injury and Eric Dier not really convincing many people with his recent performances for Tottenham Hotspur.
Although manager Gareth Southgate is more of a reputation-based player selector rather than on current form, he cannot ignore Chalobah’s good form before finalising his squad in November.
For Chalobah, he must keep performing the way he has been in the last few games. If he remains consistent, there won’t be much choice for Southgate other than taking him to Qatar.
The 22-year-old has a big challenge against Manchester United in the next league game, before a tricky game away to RB Salzburg in the Champions League. This is an intense period of matches before the World Cup, hence players like Chalobah, who are looking to push for a place in the squad, need to stay focused and not look too far ahead.
