Transfer News: Graham Potter keen to sign North American striker to lead his Chelsea attack

published :

Jonathan David of Canada and LOSC Lille Metropole has been linked with a transfer to Chelsea.

Chelsea boss Graham Potter has identified Jonathan David as an ideal striker

According to Jeunes Footeux (h/t Express), Chelsea manager Graham Potter has earmarked Lille striker Jonathan David as an ideal player to lead the line at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are in the market for a centre-forward during the January transfer window, as they seek to provide support to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. They could make an offer for David at that time.

Although Aubameyang is doing a good job since his arrival on the deadline day of the summer window, Potter does not see the 33-year-old as a long-term option. Hence, he would like to make an addition to that department soon.

David, 22, on the other hand, has been one of the best strikers in the French league in the past year or so. After scoring 15 goals in 38 league appearances last season, the Canadian international has bagged nine goals and two assists in 11 games this season already.

Talk about doing it on the international stage, the striker has 20 goals in 30 appearances for the national team. His chief position is playing through the middle but can operate as a right winger as well.

The 22-year-old has done everything right in the last 12 months to be considered one of the bright upcoming strikers in Europe. His numbers this season have taken a jump, which is further cementing his credentials.

It would not be a bad idea for Chelsea to explore this possibility and make an offer for David in January. The player’s contract with Lille does go on till 2025, so the French side may not be in a lot of hurry to let go of one of their star players.

Hence, if the Blues are to get him in a couple of months, maybe a higher price would need to be put on the table. With the potential and numbers David has already stacked up, it is hard to argue against the fact that he would be worth whatever amount is paid to sign him

Then again, goals and assists in another league aren’t a guarantee that he will be a success here. However, those who have seen him play would know that he has what it takes to be a truly world class striker one day.
