Speaking on Talksport Radio (h/t Express), former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has pointed out that Chelsea are a clinical striker away from challenging for the Premier League title.
Moreover, Agbanlahor does not think Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the solution to the club’s number nine issue going forward.
The Blues signed Aubameyang on the deadline day of the summer transfer window after losing Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku weeks prior to that.
Talking about Chelsea needing a better option up front and their title chances, here’s Agbonlahor (h/t Express):
“The only missing part for Chelsea I thought was Aubameyang’s finishing. I felt the one where they had about 15 passes and it got placed across to him from [Kai] Havertz, I feel like a sharp striker takes the right touch and dinks the keeper there, and finishes it. Maybe that’s what Chelsea are missing to go for the title.”
Despite winning the Champions League at the end of the 2020/21 season, it was evident that Chelsea need a number nine who is clinical and can put chances away without fuss.
As a result, they went for one of their former players Lukaku and paid a hefty £97.5m to get him from Inter Milan. That move turned out to be a failure as the Belgian international never looked settled in the team, and his off-field media engagements didn’t help the cause either.
This summer they signed Aubameyang to fill up the slot vacated by Lukaku as he went back to Inter on loan. While the former Arsenal forward made a good start to life at Stamford Bridge, he has no goals in the last three starts and hasn’t looked sharp enough.
Just for context, Chelsea are fifth in the table, five points and four spots behind defending champions Manchester City. Both the teams have conceded the same amount of goals (11), however, City have scored 20 more goals than the Blues.
Now, Pep Guardiola’s men do beat teams by big margins, but they are ruthless in key situations as well. Something the Blues have been lacking. So, Agbonlahor is right in suggesting that the club could do by adding a more potent body in the centre-forward department.
