A View From The Bridge

Tuchel was left frustrated after missing out on £45 million rated rival forward

Thomas Tuchel was frustrated at Chelsea owners’ failure to sign Gabriel Jesus

According to the Athletic (h/t Metro), the former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was left frustrated at the club owners over the fact that they could not complete the signing of forward Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City.

The Brazilian international was eventually picked up by Arsenal in a deal costing them around £45m. And if the start of the season is anything to go by, that trade is looking like a steal for the Gunners. Jesus has settled in well at The Emirates and has added a new dimension to Mikel Arteta’s frontline.

It is claimed that after the initial denial to sign a striker in the summer due to problems faced while managing Romelu Lukaku, Tuchel made a U-turn and wanted to bring Jesus in. The Brazil international was even keen on a move to Stamford Bridge.

However, the owners could not get that deal done and the player moved to Arsenal. Chelsea eventually signed 33-year-old striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the deadline day of the summer transfer window from Barcelona.

Jesus is a quality player who can not only play as a striker but can do a solid job operating on either wing. So, it makes sense why Tuchel wanted him in the squad.

There cannot be much complaint from the German though, as the owners did spend a lot of money on that squad this summer. Moreover, the manager was given the freedom to be a part of the transfer committee and choose players he wants to work with.

By the end of the window, Chelsea did sign a bunch of quality players, including Aubameyang. But, it seems as if by then the relationship between the manager and owners turned sour. Hence, the sack even though it was so early in the season.

Whether the club would regret not signing Jesus will be a subject of interest for years to come. With how the Brazilian has started his Arsenal career, the answer would be yes.
