“Worst decision”- Trevor Steven gives his verdict on Chelsea’s unsuccessful summer transfer move

Trevor Steven believes Anthony Gordon joining Chelsea would have been the worst decision.

Former Everton player Trevor Steven believes that Anthony Gordon joining Chelsea would have been the worst decision that the forward could have made.

The Blues were linked with a move for Gordon this summer. Despite Frank Lampard declaring that the 21-year-old would not leave, the west London club are said to have prepared to offer up to £60 million for his services.

However, no move could materialise as such between the two parties. And now former Toffees midfielder Steven, while speaking to Liverpool Echo, believes that a move to west London would not have benefitted the forward.

“Anthony Gordon is a natural talent that is still working out to be the best he can be. He’s at a great place to be. I know there was all that hoo-ha about him potentially leaving the club towards the end of the transfer window but my goodness that would have been the worst decision he could ever have made in my opinion.”

Steven’s comments simply do not make sense. Chelsea have always been a bigger and better club than Everton could ever be. To say that a player’s career would suffer because he would move to the Blues is simply not clever.

Realistically, the 21-year-old has more chance of winning silverware with the west London club than he has with the Merseyside one. The Blues are one of the top ‘six’ clubs in the Premier League and are always expected to win some silverware at the end of the season.

The same cannot be said for Everton. The club hardly managed to survive relegation last season and is up to no good this season too. They do not even play in Europe regularly, unlike the Blues.

Everton last won a trophy 27 years ago, beating Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final. Gordon was not even born then. Meanwhile, the Blues last won a trophy a year ago, beating Manchester City 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League final. The contrast between the two clubs is as clear as it can be.

More Chelsea News:

Steven’s comments are unwarranted. Even Gordon will know that he has more chance of success at Chelsea than at Everton. It will be interesting to hear what the former Everton man has to say if the 21-year-old moves to west London in January or next summer.
