Transfer News: Chelsea will try to sign Josko Gvardiol again in January
According to Fabrizio Romano via Christian Falk on Twitter, Chelsea will try to sign Josko Gvardiol again in the January transfer window.
The Blues were interested in the centre-back this summer, but no move could materialise. The west London club even attempted to sign the Croatian defender for the 2023/24 campaign but failed.
However, it seems the bosses at Chelsea really want the player at their club. So they will now try to sign the centre-back this January as per the two journalists who shared the news.
Gvardiol recently extended his contract with RB Leipzig till 2027 (transfermarkt). This comes after Romano had said that the Blues were willing to offer as much as €90 million for the 20-year-old. However, nothing materialised and the centre-back stayed back in Germany.
He joined Leipzig last summer from Dinamo Zagreb. Since his arrival, the Croatian international has established himself in the German side. A regular there, he played a total of 46 times for them in all competitions last season, scoring two goals and assisting another four.
Chelsea have signed Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana this summer. Both the defenders had a tough time in their last game against Dinamo Zagreb, which the west London side ultimately lost 1-0.
The Croatian has huge experience under his belt, both at the league stage and European one. He would make a fantastic signing for the Blues. But they are not the only ones interested in him. Manchester City are also keeping tabs on the centre-back, and it remains to be seen if they also make a move for him in January.
With Thiago Silva not getting any younger, the Blues could do with such a young defender. Just 20, the centre-back could become synonymous with the Chelsea backline for a long time.

But for that, it would be interesting to see if the German giants will be willing to part ways with the Croatia international. He has done a solid job after coming to the club following Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate’s departures and is clearly a very part of manager Marco Rose’s side this season.
