Chelsea are set to face a fight from multiple clubs to secure the signature of Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar, either in January or next summer.
Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur were already interested in the defender and now Calcio Mercato (h/t The Irish Sun) claims that Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the Slovakian.
The centre-back, who sees his current contract expire next summer, had been linked with a move to the west London club this summer. However, nothing came of such rumours and the Blues signed Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana instead.
But the Blues have not given up in their interest and could now try to sign the centre-back for free. From January, the 27-year-old will be free to discuss pre-contract agreements with non-Italian clubs.
This is if Inter cannot persuade the defender to sign a new contract. Having such an experienced and world-class centre-back, who could be potentially available for a free transfer is bound to entice top clubs.
With Thiago Silva on the wrong side of his 30s, a top centre-back will be needed to replace him. Skriniar fits that bill perfectly. His potentially being available for free is icing on the cake as he would have cost some good money otherwise.
The Slovakian international has made 224 appearances for the Nerazzurri since joining them in 2017. He also played a crucial part in helping his side lift the Scudetto during the 2020/21 season. Just 27, the defender could potentially play his prime years at the Bridge.
Chelsea would be wise to step up their pursuit of the centre-back. With so many top clubs lurking around, things could get heated up if the defender does not sign any new contract. Fans will hope that if the centre-back signs anything, it is a contract with the Blues.
