Speaking before an international friendly against Ghana on Friday (h/t Football.London), Brazil manager Tite has backed veteran Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva to be a good coach once he hangs up his boots.
The 61-year-old further pointed out that the day Silva leaves playing would be a bad day for football. He explained it by mentioning how good the player is and how easy he makes the game look, even in tough and challenging circumstances.
Silva recently turned 38, but his performances on the field don’t reflect that. He joined Chelsea when he was 35 from Paris Saint-Germain and won the Champions League at the age of 36.
Here’s what Tite said about this Rolls-Royce of a defender (h/t Football.London):
“He will be a good coach. And he’s bad for football. Do you know why he’s bad for football? Because he makes things so easy and they’re hard as hell. He manages to make the clearest, most lucid, transparent decisions with impressive technical performance.”
He has signed one-year extensions with the club upon expiry of his initial contract. This rolling contract means there will be questions regarding his future a few months from now.
With how well the 38-year-old has been playing and the consistency he has shown, it would be sensible from Chelsea’s viewpoint to offer him another extension.
Silva is one of those players who has gotten better with age. Many players are done playing top-level football by 32 or 33, but the Brazilian is way beyond that and still showing the form of a player who is at his peak.
Not just the quality he produces on the field, the former AC Milan man is one of the fittest players in the Chelsea squad. His availability has been such an asset. He played 32 league games last season and has started every league game so far this season.
There is no doubt about Silva’s legacy in the game. The 38-year-old has won major trophies wherever he has been. He has lifted continental titles with Brazil as well. One would imagine now that the defender would like to add a World Cup to that impressive gallery. Even though he is ageing like fine wine, Qatar could be the last opportunity to do that.
