Former Chelsea striker Timo Werner has admitted that he ‘imagined something more’ during his time at the west London club since after them in the summer of 2020.
The 26-year-old joined the Blues in the summer of 2020 for around £45 million from German side RB Leipzig. He was one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe with rivals Liverpool also interested in the German international.
However, it was the Blues who won the race for his signature. But his time at the Bridge did not go according to plan. The striker simply could not live up to the expectations.
Werner won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in his first season with the club, but was criticised for being very inconsistent in front of goal.
The German eventually fell down the pecking order and ultimately returned to his former club this summer for £25 million. Now, while speaking to the German FA’s official website as quoted in Football. London, the striker reflected on his time at the west London club.
“Personally, it wasn’t the very best time. I had imagined something more. I learned a lot, won the Champions League and other trophies. I enjoyed the two years abroad very much – and enjoyed London very much. I had one laughing eye and one crying eye.”
He ended his time at Stamford Bridge with 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 appearances in all competitions. He won three trophies at the club and helped them reach the final of two domestic cups last season, with the Blues losing both games to Liverpool.
It could be argued that the criticism that the 26-year-old felt was unjust at Chelsea. The striker gave his all on the pitch and never complained about anything. Despite not getting on the scoresheet very often, the German was a fan favourite at the west London side.
The club has brought in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this season from Barcelona. Fans will hope that the former Arsenal man can bag goals and help his side lift some silverware at the end of this season. It remains to be seen if he can live up to the expectations.
