Thiago Silva is hoping for another contract extension at Chelsea
Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva is hoping for a contract extension with the club. The 38-year-old’s current contract will expire next summer.
The Brazil international turned 38 earlier this week and has now expressed his desire to play till 40. Speaking to the Club’s official website (h/t Daily Mail), the veteran defender expressed his desires.
“My aim is to play until I’m 40 years old but I don’t know if it will be this level or this competition. It depends on this season and we’ll see what will happen in the World Cup. It also depends on a contract extension but yeah, my aim is to play until I’m 40.”
Silva joined the Blues in the summer of 2020 from French side Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. Since then, the Brazilian international has become one of the regulars at the back for the Blues.
The centre-back has started in six Premier League games and one Champions League game this season so far. With new manager Graham Potter at the helm, he is likely to continue to get regular minutes under him too.
Chelsea signed players like Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana this summer. But the 38-year-old is still a regular at the club, signifying his importance to this side.
The Blues have not gotten off to a very good start this season. They have only won three games so far and currently sit seventh on the table. In Europe too they have struggled, as they sit bottom of their group with only one point.
Fans will expect that Potter can turn things around for the club. The former Brighton & Hove Albion manager could face a season-deciding next month with his side playing nine games in all competitions. Silva will likely play in most, if not all of the games.

It remains to be seen if the west London club decides to offer the 38-year-old a renewal. A fan favourite, it will be a welcome decision if the centre-back extends his stay at Stamford Bridge for a few more years.
