According to popular Football journalist David Ornstein, former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel advised highly rated midfield prospect, Billy Gilmour, to join Brighton this summer and play under Graham Potter as that would be ideal for his career.
In what has been one of the funniest transfer windows this summer, the Scottish sensation finally left the Blues on a permanent deal to join the Seagulls and play under English boss Graham Potter, only for the manager to take charge of Chelsea replacing Tuchel.
This has meant that Gilmour who left Chelsea for Brighton to play under Potter is now seeing the English manager manage Chelsea. It would be funny to imagine what the talented Scottish sensation is going through right now considering the manager’s merry-go-round.
It has now emerged that it was Thomas Tuchel who urged Gilmour to make the move to Brighton when he realised that the Blues could not use the Scottish starlet and the German manager felt that Gilmour will benefit from playing under someone like Graham Potter.
For a player who has played much of his career with the different youth ranks at the Blues, it came as a surprise that Billy Gilmour left the club on a permanent deal this summer. Whilst a loan move might have been on the cards, a permanent transfer came as quite a shock.
Gilmour, who showed so much promise during his formative years, especially during the time he was breaking into the Blues first team has had a rather underwhelming past 12 months. His loan spell at Norwich City left a lot to be desired and he could not do enough to impress Tuchel to keep him.
Whether things would have been different had Graham Potter been at the helm of Chelsea during the transfer window is anyone’s guess. Considering the fact that he signed the Scottish starlet for Brighton means that he could have trusted him at Stamford Bridge.
Gilmour could still get his wish of playing for Graham Potter should the Blues decide to sign him back in the future but right now, he is a Seagulls player. It is important for the Scottish midfielder to have a good season and get his career back on track.
There is too much talent in Gilmour for him to not become a good player in the future. His development might have taken a hit but it is only a matter of time before English football starts talking about Billy Gilmour again.
