Speaking to the official Chelsea website (h/t Football.London), Chelsea defender Reece James believes that the club’s future is bright on the field under new manager Graham Potter after just a few days of working together.
Potter, who was previously at Brighton and Hove Albion, arrived at Stamford Bridge a day after Thomas Tuchel was sacked by the club following the defeat to Dinamo Zagreb on the opening night of the Champions League.
James, who signed a new six-year deal with Chelsea days before the change in the managerial post, is upbeat about the team’s future and has lofty aims for himself and the club.
Here’s what the England international said (h/t Football.London):
“In football, things happen very fast. I’ve played against Graham Potter’s teams a number of times and he seems like a good guy so far. He’s hungry to win and I think it’s going to be an exciting future.”
The former Wigan Athletic loanee has experienced an exceptional rise in his career at Chelsea. He has been one of the best wing-backs in Europe for the last two seasons.
Five goals and nine assists in 26 league appearances last season were sumptuous returns for a defender. Moreover, he can do it all when it comes to being an ever-present in attack and defending well in one-v-one situations in wide areas.
James has already won the Champions League and the Club World Cup with Chelsea. The 22-year-old lost the two domestic cup finals last season. He aims to win every competition the Blues are taking part in while converting finals into trophy wins.
“The last few years have been good, but we’ve been to finals where we’ve lost as well. We want to win every competition we enter, and if we get to the final, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be going all the way.”
In addition to James, new boss Potter has left a good impression on a lot of players in the Chelsea squad. It feels as if they are going to enjoy playing one of the most tactically astute coaches in the Premier League.
Despite the ruthlessness of the way Tuchel was sacked, the reaction of the players tells us that the club’s co-owner Todd Boehly may have made the right decision in making this managerial change. Only time will tell if this is the start of something special, or if it is all just mere talks.
