Speaking on Talksport radio (h/t Metro), Arsenal legend Martin Keown says Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang moving to Chelsea on deadline day is a disaster for the Gunners. The former Gabon international was signed by the Blues from Barcelona for a fee of around £10m plus sending Marcos Alonso the other way.
Talking about this complete transfer, Keown expressed his views on how the 33-year-old is still a top striker, who would be a top addition to Chelsea. He adds about how things didn’t work out for the player at Arsenal.
The Gunners left Aubameyang to join Barcelona in January for a free transfer, something which was labelled as a “disaster” by Keown.
Speaking on Talksport Radio (h/t Metro), here’s the Arsenal legend:
He’s been an OK character to work with, Tuchel is saying that himself. Xavi said he was a gift from god when he turned up at Barcelona.
I think Tuchel knows how to get the best from him they’ve got a special relationship. I hope they got some of that €12m that Barcelona are now getting for him. He was allowed to go there on a free so that’s an even bigger disaster.
I think he’s going to improve the goalscoring they definitely need a striker. He was quite prolific for Arsenal. This is a top goalscorer there’s no doubt about that.
The 33-year-old scored 11 goals and assisted one in 17 league appearances for Barcelona in the second half of last season. His goals were one of the main reasons why the Spanish club managed to climb up the table and secure Champions League qualification through their position in the league table.
With Chelsea letting go of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner earlier in the summer, it was of paramount importance for them to get the Aubameyang deal over the line. Even though it took till the deadline day, the Blues and their manager Thomas Tuchel must be delighted to have their man on board.
The Tuchel-Aubameyang pair has worked before when they were at Borussia Dortmund. So, there is past chemistry there between these two, which can be used in their time at Chelsea.
Having already worked together also means that the manager will know the strengths and weaknesses of the player, which can help the latter adapt to his new surroundings. It gives hope for a Blue side crying out for a reliable goalscorer.
After a fairly underwhelming start to the season, the Blues play West Ham United at Stamford Bridge in their next league assessment. They would be after a win to reignite their campaign ahead of the start of the Champions League in the coming week.
