Marcos Alonso set for Barcelona move after terminating Chelsea contract by mutual consent
Chelsea and Marcos Alonso part ways as the Spaniard’s contract has been terminated by mutual consent. The 31-year-old is set to join Barcelona after leaving the Blues, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.
Alonso joined Chelsea from Fiorentina in the summer of 2016. The full-back had an immediate impact in the team as the Blues won the Premier League under Antonio Conte.
The full-back has had ups and downs in his Chelsea career over the years, being in and out of the side. Alonso featured 212 times for the Blues in all competitions, scoring 29 goals and providing 23 assists.
Now, the Spaniard has ended his time at Stamford Bridge after six successful seasons. Apart from the PL title, Alonso was part of the side when we won the FA Cup in 2018, the Europa League in the 2018/19 campaign and the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel.
Chelsea have made additions to the left-wing-back spot this summer. Marc Cucurella was signed from Brighton and Hove Albion during the transfer window. The 24-year-old has slotted right into the Blues’ XI.
Tuchel also has Ben Chilwell on the bench. The England international signed from Leicester City in the summer of 2020. The 25-year-old has been one of the best full-backs in England over the years.
However, Chilwell’s injuries have meant that other options have played an essential part in the team. And Alonso was the player the gaffer counted on last season to take the England international’s place.
