Speaking in an interview as quoted by popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Spezia manager Luca Gotti has claimed that Chelsea loanee Ethan Ampadu is at the Italian club on a simple loan deal with no buy option since the Blues envision a huge future for the Welsh defender in the future.
A very highly-rated defender who joined Chelsea from Exeter City in 2017, Ampadu has found himself constantly loaned out to different clubs over the past few campaigns as Chelsea look to get the Welshman regular game time and continue his development.
The 21-year-old successfully secured a move to Spezia on loan at the beginning of the season. He is expected to get regular game time at the Italian club before returning to Chelsea next summer at what will be the end of his simple loan deal.
Ampadu spent last season out on loan at Venezia playing 30 games for the Italian club failing to score a goal but managing to provide three assists. He was very impressive last season and will want to build on that and establish himself, even more, this season.
The talented Welshman has a contract with the Blues until 2024 (transfermarkt). If he continues in a similar vein, there is no doubt that Chelsea will want to offer the young Welsh starlet a new long-term deal that will see him stay at Stamford Bridge for many years.
Speaking about the talented youngster, Spezia manager Gotti has claimed that Chelsea have a long-term plan for the talented youngster
“Chelsea are convinced that Ethan Ampadu is gonna be a really important player as centre back in the future”
Chelsea may have a very impressive crop of defenders at the club at the moment but Kalidou Koulibaly, Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva are all on the wrong side of their 30s and will have to be replaced by younger options really soon.
To be fair to Ampadu though, he can play in multiple positions. Although predominantly a centre-back, Ampadu spent much of last season as a defensive midfielder and he can also play in other positions including right-back and left-back which makes him such an asset.
If Ampadu can have a good season at Spezia, there is every chance that he can find a place in Graham Potter’s squad next season. It looks like Chelsea have a long-term plan for Ampadu and it remains to be seen how exactly his career pans out.
