A View From The Bridge

“Better players around” – Young Chelsea defender takes a subtle dig at the club

Levi Colwill makes a subtle dig at Chelsea while on loan at Brighton

In an interview with the Argus (h/t Football.London), young Chelsea defender Levi Colwill dished out a subtle dig at his parent club while on loan at Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 19-year-old reflected on the first few months with the Seagulls as he aims to play regular first-team football very soon. Despite the challenging new surroundings, the youngster did not refrain away from offering a dig at Chelsea, saying he is currently training with better players.

Colwill is an academy product of Chelsea, who arrived at Brighton on loan this summer, after having spent a year on loan at Championship side Huddersfield Town last season. He made 29 league appearances for the latter, scoring two goals and assisting one.

There are better players around. Everyone in the team is such a good player. I’ve got to get better and level up. It’s a big jump, being with them everyday and training with them. The standards are higher, you can’t let them drop.

The England U-21 international is a centre-back by trade but can play as a left-back or as a left wing-back if required. He has played 11 minutes of Premier League football this season for the Seagulls and played a full game in the EFL Cup second round against Forest Green.

Colwill is a quality young talent but dishing out a dig at his parent club is not the most sensible thing to do. He may yet come back to Stamford Bridge after a decent season at Brighton and get a chance to shine in a Blue shirt.

Rather than focusing on saying unnecessary things, the 19-year-old should concentrate on developing as a player, play well whenever given the opportunity and make a name for himself at the senior level sooner rather than later.

More Chelsea News:

The youngster is currently at the right club to get enough chances for the first team and gain valuable experience. At 19, he still has time to get better and become a regular Premier League defender for years to come.
