Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher was one of the stars for the England Under-21 side as the Young Lions beat Italy Under-21 2-0 in a friendly yesterday at the Stadio Adriatico. (h/t England Football)
Rhian Brewster, the Sheffield United striker, found the back of the net twice in two minutes to secure the win for the Young Lions. But he was not the only star of the game, as Gallagher was very impressive.
The Chelsea midfielder was fouled inside the box which led to a penalty being awarded to England within the third minute of the game. Brewster sent the keeper the wrong way to give the lead to his side.
Minutes later, the 22-year-old midfielder was involved again as the relentless press led him to intercept the ball deep in Italy’s half. His interception was picked by Angel Gomes, who played through to Brewster who made it 2-0 for England.
The Young Lions did not stop there and continued to attack and press. Gallagher almost got a goal from a Djed Spence cross, but his shot was blocked by Caleb Okoli.
Levi Colwill, the Blues defender on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion this season also started the game at the back for his country. The centre-back almost made it three to England when his far-post header struck the post.
Italy’s woes would then continue, despite them playing better for most of the second half. Their captain, Nicolo Rovella was shown a second yellow card in the 86th minute for a very silly challenge on substitute Jacob Ramsey.
The Young Lions return back in action on Tuesday when they take on Germany at Bramall Lane. Gallagher’s impressive performance makes him very likely to start again for the upcoming game. Hopefully, he will get on the scoresheet this time.
